    The Sandal Wood Red (Pterocarpus soyauxii) from Gabon on our site is not an incense....Red sandalwood is a tree. The wood at the center of the trunk (heartwood) is used as medicine. Red sandalwood is used for treating digestive tract problems, fluid retention, and coughs; and for “blood purification.” In manufacturing, red sandalwood is used as a flavoring in alcoholic beverages. Pterocarpus, with the common names red sanders, red saunders, red sandalwood, Rakt Chandan, and Saunders wood, is a species of Pterocarpus endemic to the southern Eastern Ghats mountain range of South India. This tree is valued for the rich red colour of its wood. The wood is traditionally considered not aromatic. 

    The tree is not to be confused with the aromatic Santalum sandalwood trees that grow natively in South India.

    The African padauk or African coralwood, is a species of Pterocarpus in the family Fabaceae, native to central and tropical west Africa, from Nigeria east to Congo-Kinshasa and south to Angola. It is a tree growing to 27–34 m tall, with a trunk diameter up to 1 m with flaky reddish-grey bark.

    A plant of the lowland wet tropics, where it is found at elevations up to 500 meters. It grows best in areas where the mean annual temperature is about 23°c Cultivated Wild in West tropical Africa - Nigeria, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Zaire and Angola. valued for its unique taste and high vitamin C content. A red dye is obtained from the heartwood. The source of the so-called true barwood dye, it is used to color fibers and cloth, in cosmetics and in magical rites and ceremonies. An extract of the wood is used as an astringent in commercial cosmetic preparations.
